About suicidal behavior
The person with suicidal behavior lives a state of ambivalence between wanting to die and wanting to live differently. Thoughts, plans and the suicide attempt itself are part of what is commonly called suicidal behavior.
The possibility of suicidal behavior exists permanently during major depressive episodes: when there is persistent depressive mood and inability to anticipate happiness or pleasure, among other factors.
Suicide attempts can be an inappropriate way of asking for help for a situation considered to be without resolution or feeling of total desolation with life. By definition, suicide is a deliberate act performed by the individual, whose intention is death, consciously and intentionally, even if ambivalently, using a means they believe to be lethal.
It is common for the suffering person to verbalize their will and some of the most common phrases are: "I will disappear," "I will leave you alone," "I wish I could sleep and never wake up." These lines as well as the attempts must be taken seriously. Do not judge or trivialize the feelings, saying that there is no reason to do so. Seeking expert help is the best and safest way to really help.
Some of the indications for immediate hospitalization are:
- Recurrent thoughts of suicide;
- High level of intention to die in the immediate future (the next hours or days);
- Agitation or panic;
- Existence of a plan to use violent and immediate methods.
