About shopping addiction
Shopping addiction, also called compulsive shopping, is the term used to describe the physical, psychological and emotional addiction to shopping. The shopping addict has a misperception about what the act of buying means. In fact, they do not need the object purchased but it is by buying that they feel the dissatisfactions and frustrations of life itself anesthetized. This behavior is repeated in a way that damages their and their family’s financial balance. In addition to the patient buying more than they would need, they also spend much more than they should.
History of very important absences in the family, abandonment, separations, abuse, mistreatment are usually in this profile of compulsive shopping. The female sex is more affected than the male by this disease, which can bring other emotional disorders linked. It is difficult to find a person who has only a shopping compulsion, usually associated with depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder. In the euphoric phase of bipolar disorder, for example, when the person feels omnipotent, who thinks they can do everything, the person buys excessively. In this case, over-buying is a symptom of bipolar disorder and not compulsion to buy.
In compulsion, people buy what they will not use, nor need that object. The act of buying is more important than having the object. It is an occasion when a type of power is exercised, purchasing power. This purchase can give the illusion that some emotional gap in life is being filled. It is a way for people to feel good about themselves. The effect is short-lived and soon comes depression, because the person spent what the person couldn't and the initial problem is still there.
Addiction can develop quickly or over a long period of time. Its roots are basically in the way of dealing with stress and anxiety. In these situations, the addictive behavior comes into play, putting the act of buying as a way of relieving these symptoms.
