About borderline
The main characteristic of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is the unstable pattern with which it handles interpersonal relationships, self-image, affections and a high degree of impulsivity. The onset of symptoms usually occurs in adolescence, aged 12, 13, and is perceived as low school performance, low social interpretation and family conflicts, among others.
People with this disorder are very afraid of abandonment, of being left alone. This is a striking aspect of borderline. Different situations can be understood as signs of rejection, neglect and isolation, making the person feel angry for no apparent reason. This anger has a certain constancy and is expressed with intensity that is out of proportion to what really happened.
Impulsiveness is another common symptom, which can manifest itself as a form of excessive spending, inappropriate sexual behavior, substance abuse, binge eating or irresponsible driving.
About 75% of diagnosed cases are women, according to DSM 5, and self-mutilation is common among people with the disorder. The feeling of emptiness is usually reported, being so intense that it ends up building an increasing emotional addiction, being unable to fill that emptiness without the presence of another person and causing even more suffering. Their relationships are often unstable and intense, with many demands directed at the partner.
Borderline Personality Disorder can be treated and seeking medical help is necessary.
